1/30 - Yourself, 5x5”Colored pencil

I found this really cool 30-day challenge over at Sachin Teng’s tumblr and thought I’d try it out. However, due to my work schedule, I won’t be able to complete a drawing a day. I’m thinking of this as a “30 works challenge” instead.

Hucklebear, 11x14”Colored pencil on cotton paper

This is the first of a series of drawings that are a homage to my home state of Montana. Each one will feature iconic flora/fauna of the state. To start: a grizzly bear with huckleberries.

Common Loon and Chick, 5x7”colored pencil on cotton paper

Fun fact about loons:They spend most of their entire lives in the water. Loons are only found on land during mating season, nesting season, and those occasional accidents when a loon mistakes a reflective parking lot puddle for a lake. Their legs are so far back on their bodies that they are unable to walk like ducks and geese, and they move on land by pushing their bodies along the ground.

Apples and Feathers, 11x14”Colored pencil on cotton paper

I finished my Crow Show drawing this weekend! It is actually getting framed at a local frame shop right now. The owner is awesome and gave me a great deal on a mat and frame job that looks fantastic. I was going to wait until I got my drawing back to post it online, but I couldn’t wait. I really like how this one came out.
The Crow Show is a fun, crow-themed art show that is held every two years at the Spirit Room in Fargo, ND. It’s all for fun and anyone can contribute. There is a great mix of entries from professionals and hobbyists. Children can contribute as well. Last time I went, two little dancers performed a crow ballet that they created. They dressed up in black feathers and everything!
